Suppose we want to expand the expression (x-2)(x-2)

We have to make sure that the first term in the first bracket multiplies each of the terms in the second bracket, and then we need to multiply each term in the second bracket by the second term in the first bracket, like this:

So we have
$$(x-2)(x-3)=x^2-3x-2x+6$$
